Step By Step Reset Windows Password : Create USB Bootable Flash Disk

Last week I give my student a list of questions in the form of survey. What is the main problem they face when they use Windows. The result vary like :

  • Forgot windows password
  • Virus problem
  • Play multimedia
  • Read pdf file

Variation of their keywords they use are : xp password reset , reset windows xp , windows xp password , windows vista password, vista reset password , windows administrator password , reset administrator password, windows password unlocker, password recovery vista, windows 7 password, windows vista password, windows password recovery, reset password vista.

Huff. A lot of keyword :-)

But I’m sure the destination is clear :

They want to enter their Windows Box and I’m going to explain step by step guide reset windows password for free.

Preparation

As title state, I’m going to use USB Flash Disk as media for hacking my windows box :-)

Just joke.

Get USB Flash Disk in any size ( I use 64 MB USB Flash Disk) and format the disk with FAT32 file system.

Choose quick format and wait the process until complete.

Download ntpasswd

Download ntpasswd from http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/  or from here (in case main source is down)

Extract the iso

Use winrar or izarc for extract the content and copy to flash disk.

Make usb flash disk bootable

Next step to do is make usb flash disk bootable.

Click Start -> Run

Acronis® Drive Monitor™ is a free application developed to determine the health of your hard disks.

Type cmd and hit Enter.

You should enter command promt session.

Yes, summary of the command are :

  1. Go to usb flash disk directory ( f: )
  2. See the file list ( dir /p/w)
  3. Make it bootable ( syslinux.exe -ma f:)

Make sure to change F: to other like G: or H: , depend on your Windows setting.

The process should work smoothly and the only addition to our usb flash disk is ldlinux.sys file.

USB Flash Disk ready to use for reset windows password.

I’ll post the process in other post as I’ll try it in Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 system.
